Are you looking to pair compactness with processing efficiency?

Luckily, we use an activated carbon-based MBBR carrier to specifically meet this demand!

If you are here, you most certainly have:

  • a space problem, and you are looking for a compact solution
  • a treatment performance problem, and you are looking for solutions to improve nitrification or denitrification
  • a limited budget, and you are looking for the most economical solution to meet your commitments
  • all three of the above problems at once

Our MBBR media is ideal to meet these specific requirements.

What is the purpose of a biofilm carrier?

In a wastewater treatment plant, the place where the majority of the removal of pollution from the wastewater takes place is called the biological treatment. Why organic? Because it is micro-organisms that carry out this treatment. And it is precisely the MBBR carrier (otherwise known as chips or media) that is at the heart of the biological treatment. In other words, a bacterial support is used to host numerous bacteria. It is like a large building, where microorganisms can easily eat (clean up), breathe, and reproduce. The larger is the building, the more bacteria it can accommodate, forming a biofilm.

Why choose our MBBR support?

Because it is a medium that optimally combines

a large protected surface area: while the majority of media on the market reach between 400 and 800 m²/m3, our MBBR 1H2O3 media based on activated carbon offers 2600 m²/m3
an ability to blend well with the liquid: unlike the vast majority of existing bacterial chips that float, our media has a density close to 1, and has the structure of a sponge, thus offering excellent fluidization qualities.
The math is pretty simple: 3X more space = 3X less volume = 3X lower costs.

Advantages of 1H2O3 biofilm supports:

  • Treatment efficiency: our activated carbon-based supports offer a very large developed surface, allowing to host a large variety of bacteria, performing nitrification and denitrification.
  • Compactness: with their large surface area, our MBBR holders treat 3x more pollution in the same volume.
  • Cost-effectiveness:the more compact it is, the lower the construction costs!
  • Compressed” transport costs: it is a sponge made of activated carbon, it compresses up to 66% of its volume. 5 m3 of 1H2O3 carrier = 1,7 m3 in a truck big bag.
  • Function without agitators: thanks to their high solubility, the supports do not require agitators or over-ventilation to set them in motion (unlike those that float). The power consumption is reduced to a minimum.
  • Durability:unlike hard plastic mounts, foam absorbs shocks and does not break into small pieces. Attrition is thus limited.
  • Limited maintenance: Besides the calibration of the sensor, there is no particular operation to perform.
  • Clogging: with their low filling rate and thanks to their fluidization and the fineness of the media, clogging is non-existent. And this, even after several years of operation.
  • Flexibility:cost-effective solution for a wide range of WWTP configurations and sizes
  • Protected area for biofilm growth:Approximately 2600 m2/m3 ± 4 % (792 ft²/ft3)
  • Shape and Size: Cube-shaped holder with a nominal dimension of 20 mm x 20 mm and a thickness of 7 mm (0.78 x 0.78 x 0.27″). Small differences in measurements may be observed between individual rooms, but this does not influence performance.
  • Dry weight: 26-28 kg/m3. Wet bulk weight: 50-95 kg/m3
  • Porosity:90% to 95%.
  • Density: Ajustable. For most of the applications, the support exists in 1.04-1.1 density. The density allowance is ±0.02 kg/dm3.
  • Water Absorption:Approximately 250% (% by weight)
  • Microbial colonization:About 120 – 180 min
  • Contents:Porous, flexible and durable cubes made of hydrophilic Polyesther in PU foam impregnated with activated carbon powder.
  • Security: Harmless and neutral.

  • Paper industry
  • Agribusiness
  • Chemical and pharmaceutical industry
  • Petroleum industry
  • COD and BOD5 elimination: an MBBR process containing our chips can reach high carbon removal performances: sDBO5 < 5,0 mg/L and sDCO >95%
  • Nitrification: in aerobic process, when the temperature is higher than 10°C and the alkalinity is sufficient, the biomass allows to eliminate completely the dissolved ammonia: NH4< 1,0 mg/L
  • Denitrification: in anaerobic process, denitrification occurs at the beginning of the process (pre-denitrification) with the carbon naturally present in the water, and at the end of the process (post-denitrification) with an additional carbon source to reach NGL < 15 mg/L.
  • Hydraulic and organic changes: the microbial population, firmly attached to the porous media, is very resistant to the negative effects of overloading, which guarantees continuous operation.

How to measure the performance of an MBBR media

Amount of media to purchase:

MBBR 1h2o3 activated carbon media
20 m3
Polyethylene MBBR media at 800 m².
65 m3

With the protected developed surface

For every bacterial support corresponds a protected surface, expressed in m²/m3 (ft²/ft3). This represents the surface area available for biofilm colonization, the size of the building so to speak.

The larger the area, the smaller is the media investment. In fact, for the same pollutant load, less media is required.

Example with a project requiring 52000 m² of surface:

  • Chips 1h2o3 based on activated carbon: 10800 / 2600 = 20 m3
  • Chips at 800 m²: 10800 / 800 = 65 m3

With a standard bacterial media, there is 3.25 times more media to purchase compared to MBBR 1H2O3 media.

Considering transportation costs

1h2o3 activated carbon chips have the texture of a sponge. With this flexibility, it is possible to compress the media for transport. Typically, a 1.7 m3 big bag contains 5 m3 of media.

This is not the case with traditional “hard” polyethylene or polypropylene media.

Let’s go back to the previous example to determine the volumes to be transported:

  • 1h2o3 chips based on activated carbon: 20 m3 / (5/1.7) = 6.8 m3
  • Chips to 800 m²: 65 m3 / 1 = 65 m3

Volume of media to be transported:

MBBR 1h2o3 activated carbon media
7 m3
Polyethylene MBBR media at 800 m².
65 m3

Volume of the bioreactor:

MBBR 1h2o3 activated carbon media
117 m3
Polyethylene MBBR media at 800 m².
130 m3

The filling capacity influences the volume of the structures

For 1h2o3 bacterial media based on activated carbon, filling rates of 15 to 35% are recommended (depending on the application).

For polypropylene media, fill rates are generally higher, between 30 and 50%. The higher the filling rate, the greater the “mixing” aeration, i.e. necessary to set the chips in motion. Manufacturers know this, which is why they try, whenever possible, not to exceed a fill rate of 35%.

Let’s go back to the previous example to determine the volumes of the biological reactors:

  • Chips 1h2o3 based on activated carbon: 20 m3 / 17% filling = 117 m3
  • Chips to 800 m²: 65 m3 / 50% filling = 130 m3

With the 1h2o3 support, we voluntarily took filling rates 3 x lower than those of the chips at 800 m²/m3 because it is a rate which makes it possible to be freed from the means of agitation and to avoid any over-aeration “of mixture”. In addition, this approach also allows the contact times between the pollutant loads and the purifying biomass to be respected (residence time).

Therefore, there is almost no difference between the polyethylene chips and the MBBR 1h2o3 media on the sole criterion of the volume of the biological reactors.
